Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today announced in a televised address to the nation that he has resigned to avert impending impeachment by the parliament.

In a one-hour live speech Musharraf defended his policies and said that he strengthened Pakistan's economy, but was sad to see it sliding since the new coalition government took power after February 18 elections.

Musharraf said that he could defend any charges against him in the parliament during impeachment proceedings and could win it also, but he said that this could destablise the country and create tensions among judiciary, parliament and military.

People across Pakistan hailed his stepping down from power and political parties described it as a victory for the democratic forces.

People gathered around televisions and starting dancing in joy as soon as Musharraf announced his resignation. Sweets were distributed in the streets amid celebratory drum beats.
