The Himalayan state of Kashmir is divided between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan. The scenic valley was devastated by a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005. More than 73,000 people were killed and some 3.3 million others were left homeless by the calamity.

A US-military Chinook helicopter lands in Muzaffarabad

US Chinook helicopters helped the huge rescue and relief effort along with international community. They made hundreds of sorties carrying supplies and injured in the inaccessible mountainous terrain and were popularly called The Angels of Mercy.

Kohala bridge links Kashmir with mainland Pakistan and is built on river Jehlum

Thanks to international and local efforts, life is returning to normal at fast pace. New buildings and homes are are being rebuilt in the area.
