Photo feautre: Pakistan chief justice freed

On March 24, 2008, Pakistan's newly elected prime minister announced that his government will release all Supreme Court and High Court judges who defied military dictator General Pervez Musharraf's November 3 imposition of emergency rule. Musharraf, who has retired since, had detained judges with their families fearing that they might rule against his candidature as a presidential candidate in October 6 election, becuase consitution barred a state servant from being candidate for any election.

As premier Yousaf Raza Gilani made the announcement, barridcades were removed and people thronged his residence dancing on the beat of drums to greet Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
